Introduction
Tunneling and microtunneling are two mechanized trenchless technologies that enable the construction of deep underground structures with a high level of quality.
Both technologies can overcome natural obstacles or existing structures (rivers, mountains, metros, roads, buildings…) in all geological conditions, even under high hydrostatic pressure. They are useful in urban areas to keep traffic moving, reduce noise and visual pollution, and take up only limited surface space.
Bachy Soletanche performs tunneling and microtunneling works in partnership with “BESSAC”, one of the leaders in the field, a subsidiary of the Bachy Soletanche Group.
Distinguish of Tunneling and Microtunneling
Tunnel
- Principle: A tunnel boring machine (TBM) is used to excavate a circular tunnel, and reinforced concrete precast segments are pre-placed at the rear of the machine. The excavation process takes place under closed conditions.
- Sealing type: earth pressure balance TBM, mud TBM, air pressure TBM.
- Diameter range: 2200mm to 8000mm.
- Applications: sewers, drainage pipes, utility corridors, subways, etc.
Micro Tunnel
- Principle: Push the reinforced concrete pipe from the launch silo into the soil, and control the micro tunnel boring machine (MTBM) on the ground to excavate. The excavation process takes place under mud-enclosed conditions.
- Diameter range: 500mm to 3500mm.
- Applications: sewers, drain pipes, drain outlets, water pipelines, gas pipelines, utility corridors, pipe roofs, etc.
